English Language Development

Supporting EL Teachers and Administrators: Weekly Zooms

With the news of school closures until the end of the school year, we have heard that there is an increased need for you and your colleagues to connect and learn from each other, share resources and provide the emotional and professional support to meet the demands of equitable access and EL appropriate instruction through distance learning, materials or one-on-one outreach with your English Learners.

We at Californians Together have witnessed through various hosted Zoom webinars and meetings the need for people to be connected and wanting to share and learn from each other.  With that in mind, we are offering various opportunities to uplift each other and at the same time make a difference for our students.

Integrated/Designated ELD  

Elementary

TK-5

 

This zoom meeting covered examples of teachers implementing integrated and designated English language development through distance learning and create a space for elementary school teachers to connect and learn from each other by grade-spans.

Tuesday April 21

Designated ELD

Secondary

Grades 6-12

This zoom meeting will cover examples of teachers implementing designated ELD lessons and instruction and how they outreach to their students to engage in language development through distance learning. A space will be created for secondary teachers to share by grade spans.

Integrated ELD

Secondary grades

6-12

Content area teachers will share how they are able to include integrated ELD through their distance learning experiences. A space will be created for secondary teachers to share by content area.

Sessions later in May and June will cover Spanish and Asian Languages Bilingual Instruction, Meeting Social Emotional Needs of Students, Early Childhood Education and Dual Language Learners, Support for Immigrant and Refugee Students and Parent Engagement.

Call on the Budget Conference Committee to ensure funds for ELD and Bilingual Teacher Shortage are included

It’s that time again! The legislative Budget Conference Committee is at work reconciling differences in actions taken by the Assembly and the Senate Budget Committees specific to the May Revision State Budget 2016-17.

Your help is needed NOW!! Please call and click on the link that say “Click here to Email Legislator” at the bottom of this action alert to send the letter Senate Members on the Budget Conference Committee to:

  • Support the Assembly version of allocating $1.246 million of Federal Title III carryover funds to the California Department of Education for the development of professional development video series specific to: ELD (integrated and designated) across content areas & designing courses for the middle and high school grades that are also ELA courses that would allow EL pupils to accrue credit toward graduation.
  • Include addressing the bilingual teacher shortage in the budget trailer bill specific to the proposed Center on Teaching Careers language.

These requests are made in order to provide to teachers and school districts critically necessary resources so that EL pupils can be given quality ELD instruction and the opportunity to graduate and graduate on time!!

Write to State Board of Education to Approve New English Language Development Standards

On November 7, 2012 the State Board of Education will vote to adopt the newly revised and aligned English Language Development Standards (ELD) to the English Language Arts Common Core Standards.  Letters need to be sent to the State Board of Education President, Dr. Michael Kirst.  Email the letter below now!
