Fostering a Safe and Inclusive Learning Environment in California’s PreK-12 Schools – Grades K-2

This K–2 lesson module is the first in a series from Californians Together’s Support for Immigrant and Refugee Students (SIRS) initiative. Designed to build trust and emotional safety in the classroom, the module engages young learners in activities that promote self-awareness, empathy, and connection.

Overall goals & structure:

  • Lay the foundation for discussing sensitive themes (like immigration or separation) in subsequent lessons by strengthening community and self-awareness first
  • Build classroom norms and trust through teacher-led modeling “with heart”
  • Foster emotional literacy, empathy, and social awareness through creative and personal expression
