Newcomer students boost enrollment, but bring new challenges to schools 

In the past few years, thousands of newcomer students have enrolled in San Diego County Schools. They come from all over the world, including Ukraine, China, and Afghanistan as well as Venezuela, Colombia, Cuba and Haiti. Californians Together Deputy Director Xilonin Cruz-Gonzalez said that California districts are engaging in promising practices for serving newcomers, but that systemic change is needed to ensure that schools can meet these students’ need statewide.
