California wants more kids in bilingual classes — but won’t spend enough to expand them

In 2021, the California state legislature created a $10 million dollar grant program to expand dual language programs over the past three years. With that money gone, advocates are sounding the alarm about the lack of resources for meeting the state’s ambitious language goals for the year 2030. Californians Together Executive Director Martha Hernandez raises the need to bolster the bilingual teacher workforce, especially for languages that are less commonly spoken in our state.
